The award was announced in the magazine's September 30, 2002, issue.
The magazine's review team wrote: "We awarded our Editor's Choice for lockdown devices to PC Guardian's Notebook Guardian Ultra because it was so difficult to cut through," noting that it took more than 15 minutes to cut the Ultra's hefty galvanized steel anti-theft cable.
The Network Computing team pitted the Notebook Guardian Ultra against competing products offered by Kensington Technologies and Targus — as well as the Notebook Guardian Ultra's "little brother," the Notebook Guardian (model 2000). They also compared cable locks with motion-sensor alarms.
The Ultra won hands down, receiving a 5 rating for effectiveness — the highest possible. The other cable locks received effectiveness ratings of 3. Motion-sensor alarms received effectiveness ratings that were lower.
This is the third "best of breed" competition the Notebook Guardian Ultra has won. It has twice received "Best Buy" recommendations from the editors of Secure Computing Magazine, who describe it as "a heavy-weight, robust, attack-resistant device" (Secure Computing, August 2001).
