Major Victory in Patent Infringement Case for Computer Security Manufacturer PC Guardian

October 14, 2003

San Rafael, CA, USA — Today, Micro Security Devices Inc. (dba PC Guardian), a leading computer security products manufacturer, announced a major legal victory over business rival Kensington Technologies Inc.

On October 7, 2003, a three-judge panel of the US Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit unanimously decided in favor of PC Guardian in a patent-infringement lawsuit brought by Kensington and its parent company, ACCO Brands Inc., the office supply business unit of Lincolnshire, Ill.-based Fortune Brands Inc.

"The decision affirms that the Notebook Guardian family of laptop computer anti-theft devices do not infringe upon Kensington's patent," says PC Guardian Senior Vice President, Ann Laurenson, who spearheaded her company's legal effort to win the non-infringement opinion.

"This decision removes any doubt that PC Guardian can freely manufacture and provide Notebook Guardian products to our customers," she adds.

The Notebook Guardian family of products (U.S. Patent Nos. 5,983,679 and 6,321,579) is used by businesses and institutions around the world. These include numerous Fortune 1000 companies and many US government agencies. In addition, the laptop cable lock is re-marketed by Itasca, Ill.-based Fellowes Inc., a leading provider of office supply and computer peripherals products.
