Glossary of Terms

Anchoring Point
A stationary, strong and closed point to which a Security Cable or Cable Lock can be attached. Anchoring points on office furniture may include the through-hole (typically used to thread cables), a desk leg (providing that the leg cannot be lifted and that a cable cannot slide underneath), or a Cable Anchor.
Anti-Theft Package
An all-in-one physical security solution that contains a complete security solution design for individual security requirements. Generally, Anti-Theft packages will include a Security Cable, Padlock, Locking Disc, and individual attachment accessories.
Case / Casing / Chassis
A computer case, sometimes referred to as chassis or casing, is the removable exterior shell of a desktop computer, most often held in place by screws. PC Guardian offers anti-theft products that not only prevent the theft of an entire computer, but also prevent removal of the case, thus securing against theft or tampering of the computer's hard drive, memory cards, video cards, etc.
Custom Cables
Cables are available in Classic/Standard and Ultra strengths and specified lengths, but PC Guardian also custom manufactures specific cable lengths. Data Leakage
Also referred to as Data Loss or Information Leakage, is the unauthorized transmission of information from the computer systems of an organization to outsiders. Data Leakage may occur through either unintentional oversight or malicious intent.
Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act (GLBA)
Also known as the also known as the "Gramm-Leach-Bliley Financial Services Modernization Act, Pub. L. No. 106-102, 113 Stat. 133," is an Act of Congress which includes a rule requiring banks, securities companies and insurance companies to develop a strict, multi-tiered written information security plan that describes how the company is prepared for, and plans to continue to protect clients nonpublic personal information.
Hardwired Peripheral
Any computer peripheral that has a power or data cord permanently attached to the device. Most keyboards and computer mice are hardwired. If the cord can be unplugged from the device, as is possible with many printers and scanners, then the device is not hardwired.
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA)
Passed in Congress in 1996, HIPPA is intended to protect and standardize health insurance in the US. As part of this act, the "Final Rule on Security Standards" took effect in 2006 and lays out three types of Security Safeguards (Administrative, Physical and Technical) that health organizations must comply with.

Keying
Term used to describe the different ways a lock can be used in relation to its keys. See our Keying Options Guide for details on keying specifics.
Malware
Derived from the words "malicious" and "software," malware is a computer application designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent. The term malware encompasses many types of hostile software such as computer viruses, worms, trojan horses, spyware, and misleading adware.

Master Coded Technology
An exclusive "Two Factor Athentication" system which requires the possession of both a physical decoder device (the ComboGenie) and a private Administrative code in order for an authorized administrator to unlock a Combination Lock. A Master Coded system allows total administrative control while allow providing individual users to set and rest their own personal combination.

Physical Security
The first line of defense in a multi-layered strategy against computer theft. Physical Anti-Theft devices lock down equipment to prevent it from falling into the wrong hands. Research shows that the majority of data breaches occur due to stolen equipment. Security software is a necessary step against data theft, but preventing physical access to unauthorized parties is the first step in securing valuable assets.

Push Button Lock
Unlike standard locks, which require a key to both lock and unlock the lock, Ezolution "Push Button" locks can be locked simply by pushing down on the locking head. A key is only required when unlocking the lock. This convenient design makes large deployments fast and easy.

Sarbanes-Oxley Act
Also known as the also known as the "Public Company Accounting Reform and Investor Protection Act of 2002," requires publicly traded companies to adhere to strict accountability standards, including those related to the security and distribution of information.

Security Loop What is a security loop?
A small oval opening developed specifically for computer locks that is found on most computers and monitors as well as many peripherals.

Security Slot What is a security slot?
A small oval opening developed specifically for computer anti-theft devices. It is found on most computers and monitors as well as many computer peripherals. Computer locks are inserted into the Security Slot and then grip to the interior case of the computer.

Spacers
Included with all Ezolution Locks, spacers ensure a snug fit and enhance theft protection by minimizing the gap between a lock's bumper and computer's casing, thereby reducing the risk of tampering. Spacers can be easily snapped on and off of the Ezolution Lock as needed.

Type A USB Port / Type B USB Port What is a security loop?
A Type A USB Port is the standard USB port standard on most computers. Type B USB ports are often found on peripherals. The PC Guardian USB Port Security system is only compatible with non-recessed Type A USB ports.

A permanent industrial-strength adhesive used as a bonding agent to attach anchoring products and accessories directly to flat surfaces.
